Creating An Impression
The goal of this assignment is to further deepen the knowledge acquired in class this semester in producing an effective speech presentation, please include the following criteria as a comment to this blog before our next class meeting on Thursday, May 21st.Find a clip of a presenter (celebrity, athlete, politician, etc.) on Youtube or some other video outlet available to you on the Internet, and evaluate why you feel he or she makes an impact on you through his/her speech. You can use the feedback form you will be using to evaluate your peer's presentation next week as a reference for what to look for in this review. This presenter can be making a speech, giving an interview or in a film as a character who makes an impact on you. The clip should not be more than two minutes (it is just a small part of the whole presentation). Place the url address of the link in the blog for me and your peers to look at as they review your posting. Additionally, be prepared to share why you chose this person in our class meeting on Thursday. As stated, you can use Youtube, news site (CNN.com, msnbc.msn.com) live.com/video, TED Talks site or some other video sharing location on the web.

After searching for a little while on youtube.com for a public speaker that I admired, I finally came across this particular video of a lady named Amanda Gore. She possesses the exact qualities that I would like to gain as a public speaker and it is clear how much she can "wow" her audience, which is also something I would like to be able to do. Amanda Gore's "WOW" factor is that she uses so much enthusiasm that it would be almost impossible for her audience not to simultaneously feel the emotions she is portraying. Her speech caught my attention because of the visual aids she uses along with every point she makes; this technique really lets the audience relate not only by listening, but by actually seeing with their own eyes what she is talking about. While she is talking, she is constantly smiling, which is a contagious factor of public speaking. Just by watching her, I felt myself smiling/laughing at her because she was so enthused and happy about her topic. Overall, Amanda Gore is a public speaker that portrays skills that could be useful in the growth of my own public speaking education.
Randy Pausch was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He was a man that had died from pancreatic cancer at the young age for 47. He left his wife and three young children behind, but he did not leave them behind without a great memory of who he was.
At Carnegie Mellon University they had a program that allowed staff to give a hypothetical last lecture. This was until Randy Pausch came along and really lectured for the last time. The lecture that Randy Pausch gave was about achieving your childhood dreams. This speech made such an impact on me because I could relate to it, as anyone else could. Everyone has childhood dreams. This funny, heartwarming, and inspiriting, lecture that Pausch gives reminds everyone of those dreams and it reminds us that it is never to late to achieve them.
I’m posting two links because it was a really long lecture. The first one is the full lecture that he gave at Carnegie Mellon University and the second one is a briefer version that he gave on Oprah.
Although I like the full lecture better, Pausch is still able to get his point across and touch his audience just as much with the shorter lecture.

Samantha Brown is a host of a TV travel show Passport to Europe and I chose her as a speaker I admire because of the confidence and enthusiasm she portrays in her presentation. These qualities and the fact that she is so comfortable in front of her audience gives me the impression that she knows what she in talking about. She is engaging, smiling and cheerful. Her pronounciation is clear, and speech unhurried, which makes it easy to understand her message with time to process the information. I think she has all the important qualities of an excellent public speaker that I admire and would like to acquire some day.

After searching and watching many speakers I realized what makes a good public speaker is someone who can effect their audience.Oprah is someone that possesses qualities that make a great public speaker. She has a good conversational voice and is very clear in what she is saying. In this short clip, she brings humor into her speech and laughs which wakes the audience up. I love to watch Oprah speak because I feel as if she is never boring, never mono tone and always keeping my interest. Not only is she enthused, but she is a very passionate person. When she speaks about a particular subject you can tell that she believes in what she is saying. Her speeches never feel over rehearsed or memorized. The conversational tone in her voice makes it easy to relate to what she is saying. She also makes great eye contact with the room and is never staring down. This is something I find difficult to do. She is a very contagious speaker and I hope to someday deliver speeches as well as she does.

Once we were given the assignment of finding someone who we thought was a great speaker and made a big impact on us I knew that I was going to choose Tony Robins. He is a motivational speaker that I grew up listening to because my mom would constantly play his CDs when we were in the car. When he talks his voice seem to attract you in to the conversation no matter what it is about. Then when you look at him he is always smiling and has so much energy you cannot help but keep listening. Also when you watch him talk he seems so comfortable and even if he does make a mistake he just keeps going with his speech and doesn’t let it get to him.
I chose republican congressman Paul Ryan as my admired speaker. It may just be because I align myself with his ideals, but I feel he speaks with conviction and passion about the problems facing America today. Since he has not run for a major election in a while there were not many speeches I could find where he addressed a crowd. However, for the purpose of relating the skills he possesses to those we have learned in class, I found a few where he was addressing congress. He also has a few interviews and speeches made to news organizations concerning the state of the nation available through you tube. I understand that he does not have a fainting audience yet, but his message is well articulated as his proposals are thought out. Most importantly he is one of the few republicans to have actually offered an alternative plan rather than solely condemning the Stimulus Bill. Also, contrary to the "ums" or "uhhs" that we hear out of Obama when he is without a TelePrompTer, Paul Ryan answers quickly and directly as seen in this CNBC interview.

As soon as a read the assignment Al Gore popped into my head. Al Gore made see the problem we have with Global Warming and really understand how bad the problem is. Before watching Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” I had only read things on Global Warming and didn’t entirely understand or know why it was such a big deal. When he spoke about Global Warming he made it easy to understand what it was and how it was affecting the earth. While he was speaking it was easy to see he was truly passionate about the topic and made it interesting by using lots of visual aids and injecting humor. When Al Gore spoke in “An Inconvenient Truth” he made me want to listen to what he had to say. Al Gore made an impact on me because now I am 100% for “going green”.

The public speaker who I admire is the poet, Billy Collins. Not only do I find his poetry entertaining, but I find his style of speaking and his mannerisms to be intriguing. In the beginning of the clip, Billy Collins introduced his poem to the audience. I envy how relaxed his speech is. It does not seem rehearsed. It seems like he is talking to a small group of friends, rather than a large crowd. Another quality I admire is his humor. When I give a speech, I am way too nervous about delivering the topic at hand, let alone incorporating humor into it. And when Collins makes a joke, he pauses to laugh with the audience, creating a sort of connection with them. Billy Collins also manages to pull his eyes away from the poem to make good eye contact with the people in the audience. He pauses between sentences to take a breath. He nods his head around and makes natural relaxed hand gestures. These are all qualities I hope to gain from this public speaking course.

After receiving this assignment I did not know who I was going to choose. I came across a man named Ruben Gonzalez, a former Olympian. Since the start of his speech you can see and hear the intense passion of Ruben's voice. I admire Ruben because I feel like he has more fun telling his stories about the Olympics then actually living them. I feel like this is a great quality for a public speaker because it immediately pulls in the audience and catches their attention. Ruben also adds little details in his speech to wow his audience. When Ruben talks about riding his sled he tells his story with the most enthusiasm and excitement and the crowd really reacts. Not only does Ruben get the immediate attention of his crowd but he keeps them entertained the whole time not giving them one chance to think about something else. I found myself glued to the screen until the speech was over because it was so interesting. Ruben Gonzalez is a great public speaker because of his enthusiasm and excitement.

As soon as this task was assigned, I immediately thought of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech, “I Have a Dream.” I chose this speech because of his enthusiasm and passion. His love and determination within this speech is overwhelming and moving. The entire audience felt emotionally connected and inspired. The gestures and his word usage were both amazing throughout his speech, and his eye contact was intact. I admire Martin Luther King as a hero; someone who changed the world, and I think he deserves to be known as an amazing public speaker. In this class, I hope to establish the qualities of Martin Luther King Jr. when it comes to speaking. His passion for his topic is out right beautiful, and I truly admire him. I recommend everyone to listen to him speak during this speech, and to watch his eyes because they truly do all of the speaking.
I believe that humor is the most important part of public speaking. I know that I remember something better if I can attach something funny to it, and I have friends who can recite entire comedy specials word-for-word by memory. Most speakers are lucky if they can even get their general message across.
I've always admired comedians in general for their public speaking ability. They're not just getting up and talking to an audience, they're making us laugh and giving us a good time. They have that conversational tone that makes their audience feel like part of a group.
The comedian I chose specifically for this assignment is none other than Stephen Colbert, from The Colbert Report. His over-the-top personality captures his audience and holds their attention for the duration of the show, as he goes on to make fun of just about everything in his condescending, sarcastic tone of voice. His charismatic personality put him on the ballot during the primaries (albeit only for a week or so), sent his DNA into space, and has gotten several things named after him, including a bridge in Europe and a species of spider.
The clip I picked is the intro from a recent episode, showing his enthusiasm, his sense of humor and his attention-grabbing personality.

When recieving this assignment I knew actually who I wanted to do. This person is someone that I have always admired as a excellent public speaker. When he gets up to give his speech he is confident in what he is saying, very strong speaking voice, and very much well rounded as a speaker. His voice is just so strong and forcefull that he gets his audience focused on his speech right from the first line. Martin Lurther King Jr is a wonderful public speaker and he is someone that I have always admired for how strong he would give his speeches and how he knew how to get his audiences attention right away. He shows pride in his speeches when he gives them and also confidence that his words will change something someday.

I wasn not sure who to pick so I searched youtube for several different. I came across an interesting video about Ronald Reagan. I admire his use of humor in many of his speeches. He is enthusiastic and seems to enjoy being in the public eye. His voice is not monotonic and he manages to smile throughout his speeches. I also admire his calmness when asked difficult questions about the government. He manages to turn the question around with a humorous twist. Ronald Reagan is also not afraid to poke fun at himself in his speeches. Moreover, he is well prepared for any interview and any possible question that might come his way. His preparation is shown through several of his political debates with democratic politicians. He is not afraid to say what is on his mind, which I truely admire.
After a few minutes of thinking about who I admire as a public speaker. I immediately thought about Bruce Jenner. He is very known for the speeches he does.
Through his entire speech Bruce talks with his hands. We learned in class that we should not just be standing still while presenting a speech. As you're watching him talk, you can tell he is interested in the topic he is discussing to the audience.
Bruce brings in his real-life scenarios into his speech. I think this makes his audience feel more related to him and know he knowns what he is talking about.
One thing I like that he does is ask the audience a question. This keeps them from zoning out during his speech. Bruce has excellent public speaking habits and some that I need to pick up.

After browsing you tube for awhile I finally came across a speach of someone who I have admired since i was just a child. The speaker I have choosen was Emmitt Smith. Former Dallas Cowboys runningback. The reason I had chosen him is because their are many athletes who give speaches but their are also many who are not very good at doing it. Emmitt Smith is a great public speaker. He speakes cleary and he speaks with great motivation which i respect tremendously. He always knows what he wants to say and does a terrific job expressing his emotions in a conversational speach. Not only is he an ALL American running back but he is a great motovational speaker as well.
When i was given the assignment of picking a speaker that i admired, i really did not know who i was going to pick. But as i thought about it, Ellen Degeneres because her show is just fun to watch since she is very outgoing and she is very awake and spunky when she talks, she can also make you laugh which i think is a very good characteristic and her "wow" factor. She knows how to catch my attention in stead of someone talking like monotone, which gets boring to watch. It has an impact because i wish one day that i can be able to walk out in front of a bunch of people and not be shy or nervous about talking, since if i know what i am talking about i should not have to worry about what people might think.

It took me a while to find a public speaker that I could look up to. After searching on youtube for a little while, I wasn't having much luck. Until I remember a speaker that came to my high school a couple times, his name is Reggie Dabbs. I can honestly say he is the only speaker that I actually paid any attention to. His enthusiasm is uncanning when he stands up infront of a crowd and starts talking. He doesn't just speak, he expresses himself. Reggie is very upbeat and he even yells to get your attention and to keep you interested in what he is saying. Even sometimes while he's talking he has music playing in the background and it's always song that relates to what he's talking about. And not only does he just talk, but he also sings...and he even plays the saxaphone. He will literally do anything to keep his audience entertained. It's very difficult to get up infront of an audience of over a hundred people and be able to speak to every single one of them personally, but when Reggie speaks his passion and his engergy is so intense that you swear he is talking to you one on one. You can see when he talks that tries to make eye contact with everyone in the room, no matter how much the room is filled. Not to mention he can make you laugh and cry at the same time. In the beginning of speeches he'll having you laughing so hard that your eyes will start to tear, but by the end he starts to get really serious and tells personal stories from his own life and those tears of laughter turn into tears of sorrow. He brings everything to the table and doesn't hold anything back when he gets infront an audience. He's just not a public speaker, he's a motivational speaker. And he motivates me to try and become a better public speaker.

It was very hard for me to think of a public speaker that interested me. After a while i started to really think, and thought of Sarah Palin. During the times of elections her speeches were very well spoken and i thought in this video where she is talking about abortion and evolution she chose her words wisely and spoke truthfully and definitely was serious about the subject. She kept eye contact with the interviewer most of the time, she answered the questions that was being asked and gave her own opinion about the matter.I truly do like the way Sarah Palin speaks, she is very professional when speaking and i hope that i can learn from her to speak as good as her one day.

I admire Abraham Lincoln the most as a public speaker. I chose him because he was memorable. His speech made so much of an impact that you still hear parts of it quoted today. Another reason I chose him is because he was highly respected, and not only because he was the President at the time, but because the people loved and trusted him. I think respect is an important quality to have when being a public speaker. Without respect no one will listen to you or take anything you say seriously. Lastly I chose President Abraham Lincoln because he was contagious. His wording hooked all his listeners in right away. Where as, today when a President delivers a speech many of us get angry about how it interrupted our favorite show or leave the room because we don't care what they have to say. Nobody would do that to Abe Lincoln people actually traveled just to hear him.

While searching for an admirable speaker, I came across someone whom I admire greatly and look to with great respect, Whitney Port.
Whitney Port is a cast member on the reality television show, The Hills, an active member in the 'Random Acts of Happiness' campaign, and a clothing desinger for her own clothing line. Besides being a natural and passive speaker, she also presents her self well by making herself look presentable and sound professional. In this interview I came across with Whitney Port and the news anchor from CW11, Whitney talks about the charity she is doing for 'Random Acts of Happiness'. Throughout the interview, Whitney spoke clearly, kept her composure, and spoke directly and clearly to the interviewer. Whitney gave a lot of information and ways people can become involved with her clothing line and other things she has done for charity. As Whitney speaks, you can see the passion and feeling she has towards the events and information she is talking about. Watching Whitney Port makes you realize that an informative, passionate, and clear speaker truely gets the point across to the audience.
Overall, Whitney Port has the qualities of what it means to be a successful public speaker to her audience.

I searched youtube for awhile and could't find anything interesting. Somehow I came across a statement by music performer Kid Rock. I like the way he seaks in this particular clip because he makes a good point and follows it up with good examples. He also uses some humor. I am not a big fan of his but I enjoyed the way he got point across.

This assignment was difficult trying to find a speaker that was admirable, then I remembered Sarah Palin and her speeches and how her speeches tended to captivate by her personality and fluctuation in her voice. As the speech continues you have a sense of connecting with her and to understand the reason behind the speech.

I chose the speech from "Independence Day" in which the President, played by Bill Pullman, speaks to the men and women about to risk their lives fighting aliens. In this speech, he motivates the men and women by bringing in emotional key words, such as independence, freedom, and liberty. He invokes a feeling of hope that they can win the fight by speaking positively and confidently. This speech is well written and it is given in a very motivational, very sincere manner.

After reading the assignment, I knew right away I was going to pick President Barack Obama as my motivational speaker. I started searching for speeches of Obama on YouTube and I found one that truly inspired me. Obama is a very confident and strong speaker. When speaking Obama is very clear about the message he is trying to get across. While he is speaking, it makes you feel like he is just talking to you and that is a great quality. Another great quality is the fact that he can make people cheer and smile with joy as seen in the video.

To start of i found my search for the Inagural speech.of Our 44th president of the U.S.A. to be very motivating to me as an individual..Being a president comes with an important leadership role which gives him the credit to get my attention.A good public speaker can be defined as my role my President Barack Obama because not only does he adress the economical problems facing the youth but also receives feedback from the listeners like questions from voters that broadcasted on CNN.His voice is clear and in the video you can see hand gestures and body language when he emphasises on specific statement.. The video was quite long but it still got my attention..Like what i learned from previous class the "WIIFM".Obama uses our trembling economy and hope and "yes we can" to run his speech sucessfully. Overall just that speech alone affected my personal life to not give up.

The speech I chose was given by Barack Obama in Sarasota, Florida. I idolize Obama’s speech giving ability for many reasons. He uses a variety of techniques; one of his most important qualities is his hospitality. Barack has a way of connecting with his audiences and making them feel as if that both his and their morals and values intertwine. This quality keeps his audience focused and keeps them on the edge of their seats. Another great feature that he utilizes when speaking is his composed voice. It has a tranquil tone making you believe you’re speaking to a friend which infuses a calm feeling making you feel comfortable. He also involves his family in most if not all his appearances which makes him more appealable to a more family vibe. Even if his family is not around he incorporates them into his conversations in some manner. I really admire the way he includes everyone in his audiences with his smooth way of talking and staying calm while keeping family values in mind.
