Well, I think it's safe to say that I bombed the informational speech. It wasnt organized properly and I babbled the whole time. My persuasive speech went well, I was told that I followed the sequence correctly and that made me happy. Three improvements: I need better attention getters, I need to work on the flow of the conversational style and a little more research would have served me well. Three strengths: Good organization, good tone, and good job grabbing the "ums" back before I could say them. Although I think a couple slipped out.
My informational speech went very well and came relatively natural for me. The persuasive speech on the other hand was so hard for me! I felt so lost while putting it together and when I went up to talk to everyone I was petrified I’d make a fool out of myself. For the most part I did a lot better than I practiced. Every time I practiced in front of people I’d stumble over everything and I thought I was going to bomb. Fortunately, I didn’t. I definitely do have things to improve on such as the outline of the speech wasn’t quite correct when verbalizing it, I need to get off the note cards more, I stumbled a little bit throughout the speech, and I took too much time on the need and not enough time on the rest of the key points in the outline. The things I did well on was that I had a great tone to my voice, I had good reasons and good credentials, and that I stayed calm and composed even though in my head I was freaking out. I think overall I hid the fact that I felt overwhelmed by this speech and delivered it well.
I believe my persuasive speech went pretty well. I made eye contact with every, I knew what I was talking about, and I had a good attention getter. I probably could have done more research though. I know that I should have followed the Monroe's Motivated Sequence. I was a little confused doing it, but I tried. The last thing I could have improved on is being a little more forceful with my action. I feel like I didn't really get my point across.
Apparently, I'm a beast at delivering speaches. I felt disjointed and awkward as I fumbled over Monroe's Motivated Sequence, but I tried to just stick to the formula and I guess it worked. It felt like I was just plugging values into and equation as I wrote it, and I worried about how well such a stiff organization would translate to a spoken presentation, but I suppose it worked out just fine. My three strongths would be my tone, my eye contact, and my X-Ray vision. My weaknesses were my sources (I left some out), my nerves (I still feel jumpy up there), and Kryptoite.
My informational speech was difficult for me, although I knew my information, I froze when got up to speak. As for my persuasive speech, I felt a little bit better up there however everytime I practiced at home I found myself stumbling over my words, and it followed me to class. I knew my information but for some reason when I go up there, I don't present what I know. I don't say the words that I wrote on my notecards and I basically change up my speech. Things flow into my head when I'm up there and I start to worry, and get nervous, and ramble. I tend to get quieter as I go, which makes it harder for the audience to understand. My delivery was strong in the beginning and then from there on I just fell apart. The longer I'm up there the more nervous I get and once my nerves hit me, my goal is just to finish my presentation. I have far too many weaknesses then strengths, but a strength I do have is my speaking voice. If I take the time to slow it down, my delivery turns out okay. I need to improve with my eye contact as well,I frantically search the room more then I actually make contact with someone to try and connect with them. I didn't really use Monroe's Motivational sequence at all, so I can not really incorporate that into my critique. I just need to take the time and slow down more, practice over and over again, so maybe I will feel a little more confident next time. I think the students got the understanding of my speech, just maybe it was hard to follow.
Some of the things that I needed to work on from my persuasive speech were that I mixed around the outline and did not follow some of the steps of the plan and benefit and action in order. I also need to read a little less from my note cards and just glance at them when I am citing a source. Another improvement that I should have done was I didn’t have a strong take action plan I needed to tell my audience what to do and how to take action. The things I did well on were that I believe I had a good attention getter with my story and that my closing was also very well.
Overall, I feel my persuasive speech went much better than I anticipated. I improved on my stance in front of the audience, something I had trouble with in the informational speech. I also did not lose my place in giving my speech, which I defiantly thought was going to happen. One of the main things I thought stood out in my speech was my ability to apply my points to the audience’s personal experiences. Another strength I thought I had was putting my own personal life and reasons into the speech to establish credibility. My final strength was separating my main points into how the topic affects animals and how it affects people, so that it could appeal to people where ever their emotions stood. Some of my weaknesses included playing with my hair, not making direct eye contact with the audience, and not citing my sources well enough. I also did not make the best use out of Monroe’s Motivated Sequence.; although the same information was in my outline, it was not done in the same order.
With my first speech, the informative, I knew I didn't do my best on it. My topic seemed way too over board for me and some of the information I didn't even know what I was lecturing about. This speech my topic was great. I loved talking about the SATs because I know so much information about them and I actually KNEW what I was talking about. Again, I got a little nervous and I tend to get tongue tied but I just can't help that. This speech I was extremely organized and knew what my plan was and the benefits. It's quite a controversial topic but I had evidence to back it all up. I finally felt comfortable in front of my classmates to speak. I was not too happy with the grade I received back and I couldn't really understand why I received a C when on my first speech I got a B? Confused me a little but I guess I didn't reach all criteria. Public speaking is not easy and it is something I have to excel better in. Overall, this speech I honestly had fun with and I thought I had a great topic. My classmates seemed to enjoy it as well considering the SATs are a test we all hate.
