Creating An Impact with Visual Aids
We have discussed how to use powerpoint correctly to contribute to producing an effective message. What other types of visual aids could be used in a speech to creae an impact. Think outside the box and using the list of visuals that we dicussed in class (and are mentioned in the text, eg., models, charts, etc.). What creative ways could technology, and the internet sites be used? Or, what other types of visuals can you come up with has examples? Give two hypothetical speech situations and the type of visual aid that would be utilized in each speech. Remember, we are focusing on being clear and contagious when we speak! Blog comment due on February 26th.

A visual aid that I find to be very helpful is a tri-fold poster board. This way you can outline things step by step for your peers to fully understand. You have enough room on this type of board to be elaborate and you can even include pictures. You can also use the internet to make a slide show that gives step by step examples and instructions on how to do something. One example that I came up with is, How to Swim. You can make a personnel VHS or DVD video of a professional who is a trained swimmer to explain and demonstrate step by step how to probably swim in a pool without a flotation device.
The second example that I came up with is How to Ride a Bike. You can have a slide show running on a screen with point of how to properly ride a bike with a human being actually on a bike in front of your peers doing each step that it tells you on the slide on the bike so it’s a visual aid plus a explanation behind the visual.

With my original topic, cosplay, (aka costume play) was to use a visual aid such as dressing up in a costume for the presentation. Not only would it be a good attention getter, but it would also see what cosplay is, in person.
There are many different types of visual aids that can be used during speeches. You can bring in models, show videos, use the chalkboard, give out handouts, etc. The internet also helps because you can use it to help make power point presentations or even using special computer programs to make charts and diagrams to show the class when giving a speech. An example could be someone giving a speech about how smoking affects the lungs. They could bring in a model of what healthy lungs look like and what the lungs of a smoker looks like for the class to observe. Another example would be if someone was giving a speech on being vegan, they could pass out fact sheets of why it is a good thing or give out handout with information about alternatives for meat so if people were interested in going vegan they could have some information to hold onto.
When making a speech you must capture the audience with seductive visual aids. Some visuals can be graphs, charts, dvd's "home videos", paper display boards, power point presentations, worksheets, using the chalkboards, making a physical model, evidence, and even a picture alblum. The internet signifigantly helps in developing these visual aids because we can access photographs, videos, and other interesting visual effects. One examples of how visual aids can help would be if I was giving a speech on the economic growth of the nation within the last 5 years I would bring in a chart to express growth levels. This would illustrate a clear idea of the point being addressed. Another example would be if someone was doing a presentation on drug addiction and used a power point to illustrate the ageing effects of crack heads in Newark.
Visual aids are very important when you are making a speech or a presentation. There are many different types of visual aids like pictures, charts, movies, tape recordings, or objects. For example, in a working situation you give presentations. A nice visual aid can be a poster board or sometimes even a slide show explaining your point. Also, when you learn CPR there are visual pictures of each step to show you what to do. Doing that makes it easier for the learner to comprehend the steps.
Visual Aids are very usefull and helps me out a lot in every presentation i perform. In This day and age its become easier for all of us. Like the on the internet we can use youtube if we have a connection or power point on the computer. But you can also not use the computer and do old fashion ways like transparency or poster or models. Models i think are the easiest if you make a good model that explains what you are presenting. Pictures are also a visual aid that i reall y like and helps out a lot and can be put in power point so a lot of it comes back to that.
I find that Break-a-way models are very useful when giving a speech or instructing a lesson. I know when I was in the military, when giving or recieving weapons training, it always helped to have a model tht could be broken down to explain how the weapon works more efficiently. And even if that was not enough, there was also a video that could be watched showing the weapon in action and general maintanence of the weapon.
Using visual aids is one of the most effective ways to communicate an idea to a large audience. Often, it is difficult for viewers to remember large amounts of information, especially if they are listening to multiple presentations within a short period of time. With today's fast-paced society, technology is one of the quickest and easiest way to communicate information. In my opinion, Microsoft Power Point is the most effective way to express ideas and to provide visuals for a presentation; however, there are other ways to accomplish this task without the aid of a computer. First, a direct way to convey a message to an audience is to bring in concrete items that serve as visual reminders to emphasize the point a person is trying to make. For example, suppose a person were giving a presentation on the impact of human intrusion on turtles; the presenter could bring in a carapace - shell - of a turtle that had been run over by a vehicle. Not only is this an efficient method to convey the message of the detrimental impact humans have had on turtles; but, it also serves as a reminder for the audience to remembers the presentation and to take away valuable information. Second, handouts are another way to create an impact on the audience. Several other ways include creating a poster, - although this method, in my opinion, is not effective because of the size of the poster as well as visibility - bringing in video clips (short and concise), or even bringing in a model. An instance in which a video clip would be effective is during a how-to or do-it-yourself demonstration. Suppose a presentation were given on how to fly fish in the Barnegat Bay. Regardless of how many times you tell a person how to grip a fishing pole and what techniques to use during release, the person is not going to be able to learn how to efficiently perform the task without a performance, or demonstration, on how it's done. These are two examples why visuals are important during a presentation and how they can leave a concrete impact on the audience.
There are many different types of visual aids but the ones i find most helpful are models, photo albums, handouts, movies/videos, and posters of your topic.
(1)if i were to do a speech on my old mustang gt i would be able to bring in a model of the car that i had made to go along with my speech as a visual.
(2)im currently doing my speech on street racing & my friends all make videos of the races & i would be able to use that as a visual for my speech.
When making a speach or a presentation, it is very important to have some sort of visual aid. It could be a photo, a video, or a display board. It can even be an item. For example, say your topic is on bike safety, you can bring in a helmet or elbow pads. Visual; aids can be very important. It grabes the listeners attention, and it helps keep them interested.
When giving a speech or presentation, I think visual aids are a necessity. They make the presentation easier to understand and show things in a much clearer way. I think pictures, models, and diagrams are a few very powerful visual aids. An example of something that a visual aid would be heplful to is in massage therapy. It is hard to understand exactly how to give proper massages when you are only learning it verbally. A picture of a body would be very useful in this situation. That way you can physically see what you should be doing, step by step.
Visual aides are very helpful to have during presentations. It gives the audience a much clearer look about what the subject is. If i was going to talk about the fall of unemployment, a line graph would be be useful as I could show its decrease and compare it to other years when it was high. Another example would be if i was going to show you how to do something, a handout with pictures on it and instructions will give the audience a better look on how to do it the right way. Visual aides will always play an important role in today's world.
My thought process for this assignment centered on where I find myself utilizing public speaking the most in my chosen career which is teaching K-5. If I were to be teaching a unit on fractions to my elementary grade level classroom I would use Hershey milk chocolate candy bars as my visual aid to enhance the children’s understanding of the concept. The Hershey bars provide an excellent choice due to the bars already being sectioned into equal pieces so ease of use is present, most children love a snack in their day which serves as a reward for the children to participate correctly, and the visual aid being a manipulative allows the children to actively participate in making and seeing fractions up close. Another venue that I would use visual aids is at Back to School nights. For this venue of presenting and introducing myself and the policies, procedures, and daily activities of their children’s classroom, I would employ the use of a power point presentation along with a brief outline handout. The brief outline handout would provide the parents who arrived early the opportunity to glance at the talking points of the evening while witting for my presentation to commence. I chose the use of a power point presentation for this forum so the lights could remain on allowing for classroom décor and projects the opportunity to be absorbed and I feel a power point presentation would be an effective way to visually show the parents situations, items and activities I will be explaining. One such example would be if I was going through the daily schedule I would put on a slide 10:00 – 10:20 Working With Words Journal. The next slide would be a picture of the exact Working with Words journal. This would provide the parents with a visual aid so when they see it come home in their child’s backpack they would recognize it and know what it is.
visual aids are very important when it comes to giving a speech.it allows people to not only hear what you have to say but actually see it. youtube is a very popular visual aid, youtube helps reinforce your message your trying to convey to the audience. and a model is another good visual aid because it shows people what your talking about and it is an attention grabber.
